Job Title: School Crossing Guard (Part-time Substitute – School Year)

Department: Police Department

Status: A. Classified B. Nonexempt - FLSA


Job Summary: Direct traffic in conjunction with the movement of children to and from school employing safety practices. Works under the immediate supervision of the Police Traffic Commander or designee.


Job Duties:


  • Control vehicular traffic at the designated crossing to allow children to cross streets safely by directing or escorting them across the street.
  • Instruct children in basic safety procedures related to crossing streets.
  • Report motorists and pedestrians who fail to cooperate with rules and safety regulations.
  • Greet the general public courteously, answering questions and providing information or directions as needed, as it pertains to the duties of      the guard.
  • Remain visible to the public and calm in emergency situations.
  • Able to drive to various locations to fill in for regular crossing guards.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • Some knowledge of traffic regulations
  • Willingness to work with and a liking for children 
  • Ability to provide good oral and written instructions;
  • Valid driver’s license. 



Work Environment: Outdoors. Exerting negligible force; walking and standing. Work in the most inclement weather throughout the school year. Training and uniforms provided.



Pay Rate: $13.13 per hour, as needed, Monday through Friday, 2 Shifts – one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
