NFWF Shoreline Resilence Study

Overview

The City of Euclid is working with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) through the National Coastal Resilience Fund to develop shoreline protection and habitat restoration strategies along the Euclid lakefront. This study evaluates nature-based solutions (for example cobble beaches, native shoreline plantings, and hybrid green-gray breakwater concepts) that reduce erosion, improve habitat, and maintain public access.

Why this matters to residents, homeowners, and shoreline owners

  • Protects private shoreline property and public shoreline amenities from erosion and storm impacts.
  • Improves lakefront habitat and water quality benefits.
  • Seeks solutions that balance shoreline protection with recreation and access
  • Provides a phased roadmap so interventions can be funded and implemented with minimal disruption.

 What we studied / deliverables

  • Project Overview & Early Concept Renderings (visuals that show possible shoreline treatments).
  • Implementation Framework (roadmap: feasibility, cost opinions, project leads, and next steps).
  • Community Engagement (workshop reports, design concepts, and an action plan).
  • Draft and Final Connection & Shoreline Protection Plan (site plans, perspectives, cost opinions, funding strategy, and narrative summaries intended for eventual adoption into City planning documents).
  • Technical materials developed to support funding applications and design refinement.

General meeting summary:

A series of landowner and neighborhood meetings took place in August and September 2025 to introduce the concepts, gather local preferences about shoreline treatment and public access, and review draft alternatives and cost opinions. Feedback from these meetings informed the selection and refinement of the alternatives described in the deliverables.

Funding & budget

This planning effort is made possible through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s National Coastal Resilience Fund with local partnership from the City of Euclid and technical support from SmithGroup and other regional partners. Cost summaries and consultant fee structures are maintained internally; the public page will show high-level funding sources and the anticipated next steps toward securing construction funding. If a stakeholder needs more detailed financial information (for example, how specific project elements were costed), they may request it through the project contact.
