Statement from Mayor Holzheimer Gail - 1/12/2026

January 12, 2026

A statement from Mayor Gail regarding the officer-involved shooting incident on January 11th, 2026.

Dear Residents of Euclid,

It is with a heavy heart that I address you today regarding the events that unfolded last night on the 1400 block of East 219th Street. At approximately 10:20 p.m., Euclid Police Officers responded to a domestic violence incident which escalated into an officer-involved shooting. This preventable tragedy illustrates the urgent need to address the rising issue of domestic violence, both locally and nationally.

Upon arrival, our officers found a female victim outside the residence with visible injuries. Her three-year-old child was still inside the home with the male suspect, who was reportedly armed with multiple firearms. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, officers were confronted by the suspect wielding a loaded rifle. An officer discharged their weapon in response, and although life-saving aid was rendered immediately, the suspect later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Thankfully, the female victim and child received medical attention and were released without serious harm.

Domestic violence affects countless individuals and families, and it is imperative we take collective action to prevent these tragedies. Help is available for those experiencing domestic violence. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911. Additionally, support can be accessed through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or the Ohio Domestic Violence Network at 800-934-9840. Locally, we have partnerships with mental health providers to offer crucial resources and support to families.

Our Police and Fire first responders are specially trained to handle domestic violence and mental health crises. We recognize the emotional toll such incidents can take on our first responders, and Euclid is committed to supporting their mental health through holistic support services. Their bravery and dedication to protecting our community are commendable, and they deserve our unwavering support.

In closing, I want to assure you that the safety and well-being of every resident in Euclid is our highest priority. Together, we must work towards creating a community where everyone feels safe and supported. I encourage anyone facing domestic violence to seek help and remind you that you are not alone.

Thank you for your attention and commitment to making Euclid a safer place for all.

Sincerely,

Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail
